Quick answer: Waterford City and County Council lets goods vehicles use loading bays and legal spaces for up to 30 minutes while actively loading or unloading; loading bays are usually signed 7am to 12pm Monday to Saturday, when nobody else may park there. Residents’ parking permits cost €15 for a first application, and a change of address is €5 but needs a complete new application. Removal prices come from the national ranges: roughly €900 to €1,500 for a local three-bed move in 2026.
Parking a removal van in Waterford city
Waterford City and County Council’s parking pages set out the rules a removal crew works within:
| Rule (Waterford City and County Council) | What it says | What it means on moving day |
|---|---|---|
| Goods vehicles loading | Goods vehicles actively loading or unloading may stay up to 30 minutes; if not actively loading, a valid parking disc is needed | A full move needs paid parking or several short stops |
| Loading bays | No parking during the signed hours, usually 7am to 12pm Monday to Saturday; vehicles with a goods tax disc may stay 30 minutes while loading | Morning is the busiest time for a loading bay |
| Non-mandatory cycle tracks (broken white line) | Parking allowed for up to 30 minutes while actively loading or unloading | Never on a mandatory cycle track (solid line), where stopping is banned |
New Waterford Metropolitan District Control of Parking Bye-laws 2026 were published in draft for consultation in April and May 2026, and the Council’s parking page already refers to them, so check the current version before moving day. We could not find a published Waterford scheme or fee for suspending parking bays for a household move; if your street has no legal space for a van, ask the Council’s parking team in advance.
Residents’ parking permits when you move
The Council’s 2025 application form sets out the fees:
| Residents’ parking permit (Waterford, 2025 form) | Fee |
|---|---|
| First application | €15 |
| Annual renewal | €15 |
| Owner-occupier or long-term tenant 2-year renewal | €30 |
| Change of address (needs a complete new application) | €5 |
| Change of vehicle | €5 |
| Replacement permit | €50 |
Permits will not be issued while you have outstanding traffic fines. You must declare the address is your principal residence, and if you rent directly from a landlord rather than through a management company, the form asks for a copy of the latest Local Property Tax letter showing the property in the landlord’s name. The fee covers administration and does not guarantee a permit.
Typical removal prices
Start with the national ranges in our Ireland removal costs guide. Northwest Removals’ 2026 price guide (May 2026) puts a local move of under 30 km at €300 to €600 for a one-bedroom flat, €600 to €900 for two bedrooms and €900 to €1,500 for a three-bedroom house, with a full packing service adding €300 to €800. A Dublin firm, Expert Removals, published higher bands in February 2026: €450 to €700 for a one-bed apartment and €1,100 to €1,500 for a three-bed house. Both are removal companies describing their own market, so treat the figures as a sense-check for quotes, not a price list. All prices are in euro and were checked in September 2026.

How to choose a removal company in Waterford
- Get at least three written quotes after a survey of your home, in person or by video, each listing the crew size, vehicle, hours and every extra.
- Ask for a fixed price rather than an estimate, and ask what happens if moving day overruns.
- Ask who arranges parking and any council bay suspension, and who pays for it.
- Keep deposits small. See deposits and final payments.
- Few removal firms are based in Waterford city itself, so also consider firms from neighbouring counties, and ask whether travel time to Waterford is charged.

We could not find a national licensing scheme for household removal companies in Ireland, so your protection comes mainly from the Consumer Rights Act 2022. Citizens Information summarises it, and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) advises on disputes with Irish traders.
| Before you book, the trader must give you | On the day, the trader must |
|---|---|
| Its business name, address and phone number | Supply the service with reasonable care and attention, and have the skills to do it |
| The total price, or how it will be calculated | Match what the advert and any written or verbal information said |
| Any extra charges | Charge a reasonable price where the price was not agreed in advance, for example where you only had an estimate |
| Your right to cancel, where it applies | Put things right for free, in the shortest possible time, if the service falls short |
The CCPC says that, depending on the case, a consumer can be entitled to a refund, replacement, repair or price reduction. Ask for a fixed written price rather than an open estimate, because the “reasonable price” rule only helps where no price was agreed, and keep a copy of anything the firm promised. The CCPC helpline is (01) 402 5555.
Renting in Waterford? Your notice period
If you are leaving a rented home, book the removal around your notice period, not the other way round. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) says a tenant does not need a reason to end a tenancy, but must give a valid written Notice of Termination and the correct notice:
| How long you have rented | Notice you must give |
|---|---|
| Less than 6 months | 28 days |
| 6 months to 1 year | 35 days |
| 1 to 2 years | 42 days |
| 2 to 4 years | 56 days |
| 4 to 8 years | 84 days |
| 8 years or longer | 112 days |
The notice must be in writing (a letter or email), signed by you, dated, and give the date the tenancy ends; the RTB says you have the full 24 hours of that day to leave. Leaving a fixed-term lease early can cost your deposit or the remaining rent unless there is a break clause, the landlord agrees, or the landlord is in breach. Student-specific accommodation needs only 28 days’ notice. Our end-of-tenancy moving checklist covers cleaning and the key handover.
Moving to Waterford from outside the EU
If you are moving to Ireland from outside the European Union, including from Great Britain, Revenue’s transfer of residence (TOR) relief can let your household goods in free of Customs Duty and VAT. Revenue’s conditions are:
- you have lived outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months;
- duty and tax were paid on the goods where you bought them, and you have owned and used them for at least six months;
- the goods arrive within six months before, or 12 months after, the date you move here to live;
- you do not sell, lend, hire out or otherwise dispose of them within 12 months, or the import charges become payable.
You or your removal company email the completed form C&E 1076 and supporting documents to Revenue two weeks before the goods arrive. Goods shipped for Waterford often land at Rosslare or Dublin Port; Revenue lists a TOR email address for each. Trade tools and commercial vehicles are not covered, and VRT relief for a car is a separate application. Our guide to moving from Great Britain to Ireland: household goods and transfer of residence paperwork goes through the paperwork.

Compare House Movers is a comparison and referral service, not a removal company. We do not carry out moves, and a listing here is not a recommendation.
