Moving in Galway: loading rules, residents’ permits and local removal companies

Quick answer: Galway City Council’s Parking Control Bye-Laws 2025 let a goods vehicle loading or unloading in a pay-and-display space stay 20 minutes before a ticket is needed; after that it must pay like any car (on-street parking is €2 an hour, 2 hours maximum, 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday). The Council can suspend ticket parking places on conditions it sets in writing. Residents’ permits stop being valid when you move, so apply again for your new address.

Parking a removal van in Galway city

Galway City Council’s Parking Control Bye-Laws 2025 are the rules its parking fines page now cites. Several parts matter for a move:

Rule (Galway City Council)What it saysWhat it means on moving day
Loading in a pay-and-display spaceA goods vehicle parked solely to load or unload does not need a ticket until 20 minutes after it arrivesTime runs out fast on a house move; pay from the start
On-street charges (Appendix 1)€0.50 for 15 minutes up to €4.00 for 2 hours, the maximum stay, 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to SaturdayA long job may need the van moved or an alternative plan
Who may use pay parkingPassenger vehicles and goods vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes unladen, not towingA larger removal lorry is not covered by pay-and-display
Suspension of ticket parking placesThe Council or its agents may suspend a pay-and-display place, on any conditions it specifies in writing, shown by a signAsk the Council about suspending spaces for a large move

The Council’s fines page lists €80 for parking wholly or partly on a footpath, and €40 each for a non-goods vehicle parking in a loading bay or a goods vehicle staying in one longer than permitted, and fines rise by 50% if unpaid after 28 days. We could not find a published fee for suspending bays for a house move in Galway, so ask the Council’s Roads and Transport section early if your street is tight.

Residents’ parking permits after a move

Galway City Council’s permit conditions are explicit about moving house: if you move from the address, the permit is no longer valid and must be returned to the Council immediately. There is a specific Change of Address application for moving within a permit area or between permit areas. The Council issues at most four permits per house, one per apartment in city residential and inner residential areas, and two per apartment in established or outer suburbs, and it may ask for proof of residency and vehicle ownership.

Typical removal prices

Start with the national ranges in our Ireland removal costs guide. Northwest Removals’ 2026 price guide (May 2026) puts a local move of under 30 km at €300 to €600 for a one-bedroom flat, €600 to €900 for two bedrooms and €900 to €1,500 for a three-bedroom house, with a full packing service adding €300 to €800. A Dublin firm, Expert Removals, published higher bands in February 2026: €450 to €700 for a one-bed apartment and €1,100 to €1,500 for a three-bed house. Both are removal companies describing their own market, so treat the figures as a sense-check for quotes, not a price list. All prices are in euro and were checked in September 2026.

How to choose a removal company in Galway

  • Get at least three written quotes after a survey of your home, in person or by video, each listing the crew size, vehicle, hours and every extra.
  • Ask for a fixed price rather than an estimate, and ask what happens if moving day overruns.
  • Ask who arranges parking and any council bay suspension, and who pays for it.
  • Keep deposits small. See deposits and final payments.
  • Several Galway firms operate from Ballybrit and Parkmore on the east of the city. Ask how travel time to and from the depot is charged.

Your consumer rights when you book a removal

We could not find a national licensing scheme for household removal companies in Ireland, so your protection comes mainly from the Consumer Rights Act 2022. Citizens Information summarises it, and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) advises on disputes with Irish traders.

Before you book, the trader must give youOn the day, the trader must
Its business name, address and phone numberSupply the service with reasonable care and attention, and have the skills to do it
The total price, or how it will be calculatedMatch what the advert and any written or verbal information said
Any extra chargesCharge a reasonable price where the price was not agreed in advance, for example where you only had an estimate
Your right to cancel, where it appliesPut things right for free, in the shortest possible time, if the service falls short

The CCPC says that, depending on the case, a consumer can be entitled to a refund, replacement, repair or price reduction. Ask for a fixed written price rather than an open estimate, because the “reasonable price” rule only helps where no price was agreed, and keep a copy of anything the firm promised. The CCPC helpline is (01) 402 5555.

Renting in Galway? Your notice period

If you are leaving a rented home, book the removal around your notice period, not the other way round. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) says a tenant does not need a reason to end a tenancy, but must give a valid written Notice of Termination and the correct notice:

How long you have rentedNotice you must give
Less than 6 months28 days
6 months to 1 year35 days
1 to 2 years42 days
2 to 4 years56 days
4 to 8 years84 days
8 years or longer112 days

The notice must be in writing (a letter or email), signed by you, dated, and give the date the tenancy ends; the RTB says you have the full 24 hours of that day to leave. Leaving a fixed-term lease early can cost your deposit or the remaining rent unless there is a break clause, the landlord agrees, or the landlord is in breach. Student-specific accommodation needs only 28 days’ notice. Our end-of-tenancy moving checklist covers cleaning and the key handover.

Moving to Galway from outside the EU

If you are moving to Ireland from outside the European Union, including from Great Britain, Revenue’s transfer of residence (TOR) relief can let your household goods in free of Customs Duty and VAT. Revenue’s conditions are:

  • you have lived outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months;
  • duty and tax were paid on the goods where you bought them, and you have owned and used them for at least six months;
  • the goods arrive within six months before, or 12 months after, the date you move here to live;
  • you do not sell, lend, hire out or otherwise dispose of them within 12 months, or the import charges become payable.

You or your removal company email the completed form C&E 1076 and supporting documents to Revenue two weeks before the goods arrive. Revenue lists TOR email addresses by port and airport; goods shipped to Galway usually arrive through Dublin Port or Rosslare, which each have their own address. Trade tools and commercial vehicles are not covered, and VRT relief for a car is a separate application. Our guide to moving from Great Britain to Ireland: household goods and transfer of residence paperwork goes through the paperwork.

Common questions

How long can a removal van park in a pay space in Galway without a ticket?

Galway City Council’s 2025 bye-laws give a goods vehicle loading or unloading 20 minutes before a ticket is needed.

Can a large removal lorry use pay-and-display in Galway?

The bye-laws cover passenger vehicles and goods vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes unladen, so ask the Council about larger vehicles.

What happens to my residents’ permit when I move?

Galway City Council says it is no longer valid and must be returned. Use the Change of Address form if you are moving within or between permit areas.

How much do removals cost in Galway?

We found no Galway-specific price survey. National 2026 guides put a local three-bed move at €900 to €1,500; a Donegal firm quotes €1,400 to €2,000 for a three-bed from Letterkenny to Galway.

How much notice do I give my landlord?

From 28 days to 112 days depending on how long you have rented, according to the RTB. Student-specific accommodation is 28 days.
