Moving in Dublin: parking bay suspensions, clamping fees and local removal companies

Quick answer: In Dublin city you can ask Dublin City Council to suspend pay-and-display bays so the removal van has somewhere to stop. Apply at least five working days ahead; the 2026 rate is €12.70 to €50 per space per day depending on the parking zone, and no private cars may park in a suspended bay. A clamp costs €125 to release, and a towed vehicle €250 plus €35 a day. Removal prices come from the national ranges: roughly €900 to €1,500 for a local three-bed move, or more in Dublin by some firms’ figures.

Parking a removal van in Dublin city

Most Dublin moves stall on the same thing: there is nowhere for a van to stop outside the door. Dublin City Council lets you apply to suspend individual pay-and-display spaces for temporary uses including set-down and collection and office relocation, and its 2026 rates are:

Dublin City Council parking zoneSuspension fee per space per day
Yellow Zone€50
Red Zone€41
Green Zone€27
Orange Zone€19
Blue Zone€12.70

The rules that matter for a move:

  • Five working days’ notice. The application must be in at least five working days before the suspension starts, so this cannot be sorted the day before.
  • Use the Council form. The Suspension of Paid Parking application form sets out the conditions; send it, fully completed with the required documents, to the Parking Policy and Enforcement Section.
  • Private cars cannot use a suspended bay. The bay is for the purpose you applied for, not for your own car.
  • Price the number of spaces. A 7.5-tonne lorry usually needs more than one bay, and the fee is per space per day, so a two-space, one-day suspension in a Yellow Zone is €100.

These rates apply to Dublin City Council’s area. If you are moving in South Dublin, Fingal or Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, check that council’s own parking rules.

What happens if the van is clamped or towed

Clamping in the city is run by Dublin Street Parking Services for the Council. Dublin City Council says the release fee is €125. A vehicle can be towed for parking in a bus lane or clearway, blocking an entrance, or staying clamped for more than 24 hours unpaid; it then goes to the city pound, with a €250 removal charge and €35 for each day it is held. Ask your removal company who pays if its van is clamped while working for you, and put the answer in writing.

Large lorries and the HGV cordon

Dublin City Council runs a Heavy Goods Vehicle cordon: 5-axle-plus vehicles need a permit during cordon hours, issued only for premises registered online. Household removal lorries are usually far smaller, but if an international firm plans an articulated vehicle for a city-centre address, ask how it will comply or whether it will shuttle goods in a smaller van.

Typical removal prices

Start with the national ranges in our Ireland removal costs guide. Northwest Removals’ 2026 price guide (May 2026) puts a local move of under 30 km at €300 to €600 for a one-bedroom flat, €600 to €900 for two bedrooms and €900 to €1,500 for a three-bedroom house, with a full packing service adding €300 to €800. A Dublin firm, Expert Removals, published higher bands in February 2026: €450 to €700 for a one-bed apartment and €1,100 to €1,500 for a three-bed house. Both are removal companies describing their own market, so treat the figures as a sense-check for quotes, not a price list. All prices are in euro and were checked in September 2026.

How to choose a removal company in Dublin

  • Get at least three written quotes after a survey of your home, in person or by video, each listing the crew size, vehicle, hours and every extra.
  • Ask for a fixed price rather than an estimate, and ask what happens if moving day overruns.
  • Ask who arranges parking and any council bay suspension, and who pays for it.
  • Keep deposits small. See deposits and final payments.
  • Apartment moves: ask your management company about lift booking and move-in times early. See moving from a flat: lifts, stairs, parking and building access.

Your consumer rights when you book a removal

We could not find a national licensing scheme for household removal companies in Ireland, so your protection comes mainly from the Consumer Rights Act 2022. Citizens Information summarises it, and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) advises on disputes with Irish traders.

Before you book, the trader must give youOn the day, the trader must
Its business name, address and phone numberSupply the service with reasonable care and attention, and have the skills to do it
The total price, or how it will be calculatedMatch what the advert and any written or verbal information said
Any extra chargesCharge a reasonable price where the price was not agreed in advance, for example where you only had an estimate
Your right to cancel, where it appliesPut things right for free, in the shortest possible time, if the service falls short

The CCPC says that, depending on the case, a consumer can be entitled to a refund, replacement, repair or price reduction. Ask for a fixed written price rather than an open estimate, because the “reasonable price” rule only helps where no price was agreed, and keep a copy of anything the firm promised. The CCPC helpline is (01) 402 5555.

Renting in Dublin? Your notice period

If you are leaving a rented home, book the removal around your notice period, not the other way round. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) says a tenant does not need a reason to end a tenancy, but must give a valid written Notice of Termination and the correct notice:

How long you have rentedNotice you must give
Less than 6 months28 days
6 months to 1 year35 days
1 to 2 years42 days
2 to 4 years56 days
4 to 8 years84 days
8 years or longer112 days

The notice must be in writing (a letter or email), signed by you, dated, and give the date the tenancy ends; the RTB says you have the full 24 hours of that day to leave. Leaving a fixed-term lease early can cost your deposit or the remaining rent unless there is a break clause, the landlord agrees, or the landlord is in breach. Student-specific accommodation needs only 28 days’ notice. Our end-of-tenancy moving checklist covers cleaning and the key handover.

Moving to Dublin from outside the EU

If you are moving to Ireland from outside the European Union, including from Great Britain, Revenue’s transfer of residence (TOR) relief can let your household goods in free of Customs Duty and VAT. Revenue’s conditions are:

  • you have lived outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months;
  • duty and tax were paid on the goods where you bought them, and you have owned and used them for at least six months;
  • the goods arrive within six months before, or 12 months after, the date you move here to live;
  • you do not sell, lend, hire out or otherwise dispose of them within 12 months, or the import charges become payable.

You or your removal company email the completed form C&E 1076 and supporting documents to Revenue two weeks before the goods arrive. For goods arriving through Dublin Port or Dublin Airport, Revenue lists a dedicated TOR email address for each; your removal company should know which applies. Trade tools and commercial vehicles are not covered, and VRT relief for a car is a separate application. Our guide to moving from Great Britain to Ireland: household goods and transfer of residence paperwork goes through the paperwork.

Common questions

Do I need a permit to park a removal van in Dublin?

Not for ordinary legal parking, but if you want pay-and-display bays kept free for the van you must apply to Dublin City Council to suspend them at least five working days in advance.

How much does a parking suspension cost in Dublin?

Dublin City Council charges per space per day by zone: €50 Yellow, €41 Red, €27 Green, €19 Orange and €12.70 Blue (checked September 2026).

What does it cost if the removal van is clamped?

The Council says the clamp release fee is €125. If it is towed, there is a €250 removal charge plus €35 a day storage.

How much notice do I give my landlord before moving?

It depends on how long you have rented: 28 days under six months, rising to 112 days after eight years, according to the RTB.
