Moving in Limerick: parking rules, fines for vans and local removal companies

Quick answer: In Limerick, parking bye-laws are made by the Metropolitan and Municipal Districts, and the Council enforces pay parking on Limerick city streets (and in Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West and Kilmallock). Parking a van on a footway, cycle track or bus lane is an €80 fine; most other parking offences are €40. We could not find a published Limerick scheme for suspending bays for a house move, so agree legal parking with your mover early. Prices come from the national ranges: roughly €900 to €1,500 for a local three-bed move in 2026.

Parking a removal van in Limerick

Limerick City and County Council says parking is regulated by bye-laws and national legislation, and that making parking bye-laws is a reserved function of the Metropolitan and Municipal Districts. Its pay-parking section enforces the bye-laws on the streets of Limerick city, Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West and Kilmallock. In practice that means a removal van in a city pay area pays like any other vehicle, which the Council’s e-parking service makes easy: it says customers can get 30 minutes’ parking for as little as €0.50.

The fines are where moves go wrong. Removal crews often pull half onto a footpath to keep a narrow street open, and the Council treats that as one of its higher-rated offences:

Offence (Limerick City and County Council)Fine
Parking on a footway, grass margin or median strip€80
Parking in a cycle track€80
Parking in a bus lane during its hours of operation€80
Illegal parking in a disabled parking bay€150
All other parking offences€40

The Council’s “Think Before You Park” campaign notes that footpaths in Limerick are regularly damaged by parked vehicles, creating trip hazards and costly repairs, which is worth bearing in mind with a loaded lorry. We could not find a published Limerick scheme or fee for suspending parking bays for a household move; the Council does license skips on public roads on written application. If there is no legal space near your door, ask the Council’s traffic and parking team before moving day.

Residents’ parking permits

Limerick runs residential parking permits, and its page says application forms, conditions and fees are available from the Council and should be presented to the relevant office. If you are moving into a permit street in the city, apply straight after you move so the new address is covered.

Typical removal prices

Start with the national ranges in our Ireland removal costs guide. Northwest Removals’ 2026 price guide (May 2026) puts a local move of under 30 km at €300 to €600 for a one-bedroom flat, €600 to €900 for two bedrooms and €900 to €1,500 for a three-bedroom house, with a full packing service adding €300 to €800. A Dublin firm, Expert Removals, published higher bands in February 2026: €450 to €700 for a one-bed apartment and €1,100 to €1,500 for a three-bed house. Both are removal companies describing their own market, so treat the figures as a sense-check for quotes, not a price list. All prices are in euro and were checked in September 2026.

How to choose a removal company in Limerick

  • Get at least three written quotes after a survey of your home, in person or by video, each listing the crew size, vehicle, hours and every extra.
  • Ask for a fixed price rather than an estimate, and ask what happens if moving day overruns.
  • Ask who arranges parking and any council bay suspension, and who pays for it.
  • Keep deposits small. See deposits and final payments.
  • Many firms serving Limerick are based outside the city, in Co. Clare, Tipperary or the county. Ask where the van is coming from and whether travel time is charged.

Your consumer rights when you book a removal

We could not find a national licensing scheme for household removal companies in Ireland, so your protection comes mainly from the Consumer Rights Act 2022. Citizens Information summarises it, and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) advises on disputes with Irish traders.

Before you book, the trader must give youOn the day, the trader must
Its business name, address and phone numberSupply the service with reasonable care and attention, and have the skills to do it
The total price, or how it will be calculatedMatch what the advert and any written or verbal information said
Any extra chargesCharge a reasonable price where the price was not agreed in advance, for example where you only had an estimate
Your right to cancel, where it appliesPut things right for free, in the shortest possible time, if the service falls short

The CCPC says that, depending on the case, a consumer can be entitled to a refund, replacement, repair or price reduction. Ask for a fixed written price rather than an open estimate, because the “reasonable price” rule only helps where no price was agreed, and keep a copy of anything the firm promised. The CCPC helpline is (01) 402 5555.

Renting in Limerick? Your notice period

If you are leaving a rented home, book the removal around your notice period, not the other way round. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) says a tenant does not need a reason to end a tenancy, but must give a valid written Notice of Termination and the correct notice:

How long you have rentedNotice you must give
Less than 6 months28 days
6 months to 1 year35 days
1 to 2 years42 days
2 to 4 years56 days
4 to 8 years84 days
8 years or longer112 days

The notice must be in writing (a letter or email), signed by you, dated, and give the date the tenancy ends; the RTB says you have the full 24 hours of that day to leave. Leaving a fixed-term lease early can cost your deposit or the remaining rent unless there is a break clause, the landlord agrees, or the landlord is in breach. Student-specific accommodation needs only 28 days’ notice. Our end-of-tenancy moving checklist covers cleaning and the key handover.

Moving to Limerick from outside the EU

If you are moving to Ireland from outside the European Union, including from Great Britain, Revenue’s transfer of residence (TOR) relief can let your household goods in free of Customs Duty and VAT. Revenue’s conditions are:

  • you have lived outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months;
  • duty and tax were paid on the goods where you bought them, and you have owned and used them for at least six months;
  • the goods arrive within six months before, or 12 months after, the date you move here to live;
  • you do not sell, lend, hire out or otherwise dispose of them within 12 months, or the import charges become payable.

You or your removal company email the completed form C&E 1076 and supporting documents to Revenue two weeks before the goods arrive. Revenue lists TOR email addresses for each port and airport, including Shannon Airport; sea freight for Limerick often comes through Dublin or Cork Port. Trade tools and commercial vehicles are not covered, and VRT relief for a car is a separate application. Our guide to moving from Great Britain to Ireland: household goods and transfer of residence paperwork goes through the paperwork.

Compare House Movers is a comparison and referral service, not a removal company. We do not carry out moves, and a listing here is not a recommendation.
