Moving in Cork: loading bay rules, residents’ permits and local removal companies

Quick answer: Cork City Council lets goods vehicles with a commercial tax disc use a loading bay for up to 30 minutes while actively loading or unloading, and pay parking is €2.50 per parking period in the city’s pay areas. A full house move takes far longer than 30 minutes, so plan legal parking with your mover in advance. If you are moving into a residents’ parking area as a tenant, the Council wants your full rental agreement and proof the tenancy is registered with the RTB before it issues a permit, and it allows at least 10 working days.

Parking a removal van in Cork city

Cork City Council’s on-street parking rules shape a removal day more than people expect:

Rule (Cork City Council)What it saysWhat it means on moving day
Loading baysNo parking during the signed hours; vehicles with a commercial tax disc may park for up to 30 minutes while actively loading or unloadingFine for a quick drop, not for a house move
Pay parking€2.50 per parking period, as shown on the information plateThe van must pay like any other vehicle in a pay area
Clearways and bus lanesNo parking or stopping during the signed hoursCheck the signs on your street for the moving date
Pedestrian areasNo driving or parking during the signed hoursCity-centre streets may need a timed delivery or a smaller shuttle van

We could not find a published Cork City Council scheme or fee for suspending parking bays for a household move, although the Council does have a process for placing a skip in a parking bay. Ask the Council’s parking team before moving day if your street has no legal space for a van, and ask your removal company how it normally handles Cork city streets.

Residents’ parking permits when you move in

If your new Cork home is in a residents’ parking area, apply for a permit as soon as you have the keys. Cork City Council says:

  • residential permits take a minimum of 10 working days to process, and you pay once the application is approved;
  • until the permit is issued, you are liable for parking charges (disc or Park by Phone) in a disc parking area during the signed times;
  • if you are a tenant, you must also provide a copy of the full rental agreement and proof that the property is registered with the Residential Tenancies Board.

The Council also issues Residents Vehicle Hire Permits, and applications can be made online or on paper from City Hall.

Typical removal prices

Start with the national ranges in our Ireland removal costs guide. Northwest Removals’ 2026 price guide (May 2026) puts a local move of under 30 km at €300 to €600 for a one-bedroom flat, €600 to €900 for two bedrooms and €900 to €1,500 for a three-bedroom house, with a full packing service adding €300 to €800. A Dublin firm, Expert Removals, published higher bands in February 2026: €450 to €700 for a one-bed apartment and €1,100 to €1,500 for a three-bed house. Both are removal companies describing their own market, so treat the figures as a sense-check for quotes, not a price list. All prices are in euro and were checked in September 2026.

How to choose a removal company in Cork

  • Get at least three written quotes after a survey of your home, in person or by video, each listing the crew size, vehicle, hours and every extra.
  • Ask for a fixed price rather than an estimate, and ask what happens if moving day overruns.
  • Ask who arranges parking and any council bay suspension, and who pays for it.
  • Keep deposits small. See deposits and final payments.
  • Moving outside the city? Cork City Council and Cork County Council run parking separately, so check which council covers each address.

Your consumer rights when you book a removal

We could not find a national licensing scheme for household removal companies in Ireland, so your protection comes mainly from the Consumer Rights Act 2022. Citizens Information summarises it, and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) advises on disputes with Irish traders.

Before you book, the trader must give youOn the day, the trader must
Its business name, address and phone numberSupply the service with reasonable care and attention, and have the skills to do it
The total price, or how it will be calculatedMatch what the advert and any written or verbal information said
Any extra chargesCharge a reasonable price where the price was not agreed in advance, for example where you only had an estimate
Your right to cancel, where it appliesPut things right for free, in the shortest possible time, if the service falls short

The CCPC says that, depending on the case, a consumer can be entitled to a refund, replacement, repair or price reduction. Ask for a fixed written price rather than an open estimate, because the “reasonable price” rule only helps where no price was agreed, and keep a copy of anything the firm promised. The CCPC helpline is (01) 402 5555.

Renting in Cork? Your notice period

If you are leaving a rented home, book the removal around your notice period, not the other way round. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) says a tenant does not need a reason to end a tenancy, but must give a valid written Notice of Termination and the correct notice:

How long you have rentedNotice you must give
Less than 6 months28 days
6 months to 1 year35 days
1 to 2 years42 days
2 to 4 years56 days
4 to 8 years84 days
8 years or longer112 days

The notice must be in writing (a letter or email), signed by you, dated, and give the date the tenancy ends; the RTB says you have the full 24 hours of that day to leave. Leaving a fixed-term lease early can cost your deposit or the remaining rent unless there is a break clause, the landlord agrees, or the landlord is in breach. Student-specific accommodation needs only 28 days’ notice. Our end-of-tenancy moving checklist covers cleaning and the key handover.

Moving to Cork from outside the EU

If you are moving to Ireland from outside the European Union, including from Great Britain, Revenue’s transfer of residence (TOR) relief can let your household goods in free of Customs Duty and VAT. Revenue’s conditions are:

  • you have lived outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months;
  • duty and tax were paid on the goods where you bought them, and you have owned and used them for at least six months;
  • the goods arrive within six months before, or 12 months after, the date you move here to live;
  • you do not sell, lend, hire out or otherwise dispose of them within 12 months, or the import charges become payable.

You or your removal company email the completed form C&E 1076 and supporting documents to Revenue two weeks before the goods arrive. Revenue lists separate TOR email addresses for Cork Port and Cork Airport, so goods shipped straight into Cork go to that office. Trade tools and commercial vehicles are not covered, and VRT relief for a car is a separate application. Our guide to moving from Great Britain to Ireland: household goods and transfer of residence paperwork goes through the paperwork.

Ready to compare? See our removal and moving options or ask for removal quotes with one short form. Our guide to comparing quotes without missing extra charges is worth reading first.

Compare House Movers is a comparison and referral service, not a removal company. We do not carry out moves, and a listing here is not a recommendation.

Common questions

How long can a removal van use a loading bay in Cork?

Up to 30 minutes, and only a vehicle with a commercial tax disc that is actively loading or unloading, according to Cork City Council.

Can I reserve parking for a removal van in Cork city?

We could not find a published Cork City Council bay-suspension scheme for house moves. Contact the Council’s parking team well before moving day.

How do I get a residents’ parking permit after moving to Cork?

Apply online or on paper. Allow at least 10 working days. Tenants must include the full rental agreement and proof of RTB registration.

How much does a removal company cost in Cork?

We found no Cork-specific price survey. National 2026 guides put a local three-bed move at €900 to €1,500, and a Donegal firm quotes €1,800 to €2,500 for a three-bed from Letterkenny to Cork.

Can I bring goods into Cork Port tax-free?

Under Revenue’s transfer of residence relief, if you qualify. Revenue has a dedicated TOR email address for Cork Port and Cork Airport.
