Moving in Perth: reserving street bays for removalists, strata by-laws and local removalists

Quick answer: The City of Perth will reserve on-street parking bays for removalists, but only at weekends: $77 per bay per day (Monday to Saturday), $38.50 for a half day, or a flat $38.50 per bay on Sunday. Apply at least two full working days ahead; late applications are refused. For a weekday move in the City of Perth, the City says an Obstruction Permit is needed instead. Airtasker puts Perth removalist rates at $133 to $178 an hour for two movers and a truck.

Reserving a street parking bay in the City of Perth

The City of Perth approves short-term reservations of on-street bays in some situations, and removalists are one of them, with an important condition: bookings for removalists are only accepted for weekends. For a removalist during the week, the City says an Obstruction Permit is required. The fees are:

City of Perth bay reservationFee
Daily rate, Monday to Saturday$77 per bay
Half-daily rate, Monday to Saturday$38.50 per bay
Sunday flat rate$38.50 per bay

The conditions that matter for a move:

  • Two full working days’ notice is the minimum, and late applications cannot be accepted.
  • Send a parking diagram showing every bay you need, and list all the dates.
  • Loading zones, ACROD bays and taxi bays need approval from City of Perth management, and reserving an ACROD or taxi bay means paying for a replacement bay as well.
  • No guarantee. The City says it cannot guarantee that members of the public will not park illegally in reserved bays, and it cannot refund you if they do. Have a plan B with your removalist.
  • Skip bins, sea containers and equipment on a bay need an Obstruction Permit rather than a parking reservation.

These are City of Perth rules for the central city area. Most Perth suburbs are in other local governments, such as Stirling, Vincent or Fremantle, so check with the council for each address.

Apartments and strata by-laws in Western Australia

Landgate explains that WA strata schemes have governance by-laws (Schedule 1) and conduct by-laws (Schedule 2) under the Strata Titles Act, in their current form since 1 May 2020; the conduct by-laws are the everyday rules for living in the scheme, and a strata company can add its own. Ask the strata manager for the scheme’s by-laws and any moving or lift-booking rules before you fix a date.

Typical removalist prices

Start with the national ranges in our Australia removal costs guide. Airtasker’s cost guide, updated June 2026, puts the standard package of two removalists and a truck at $111 to $200 an hour nationally, and at $133 to $178 an hour in Perth. It gives $1,430 to $2,210 for a three-bedroom house with three movers and a truck, and says weekend, public holiday, end-of-month and summer moves typically cost 20% to 30% more than the base rate. All prices are in Australian dollars and were checked in September 2026.

How to choose a removalist in Perth

  • Get at least three written, itemised quotes based on an inventory of what is moving, and ask how time is billed and whether a fuel levy applies.
  • Ask who arranges the council parking permit and who pays for it.
  • Ask about insurance. State regulators say most removalists only insure their own vehicles, so ask what cover applies to your goods and for a certificate of currency.
  • Avoid paying upfront. See deposits and final payments.
  • Apartment move? Book the lift and loading dock early. See moving from a flat: lifts, stairs, parking and building access.

Your consumer rights under the Australian Consumer Law

The ACCC says that when you buy a service, you are entitled to expect it to be provided with due care and skill, to be fit for any purpose you specified, and to be delivered within a reasonable time. If a guarantee is not met, the remedy depends on the situation and can include repair, a refund, cancelling the service, or compensation for damage or loss. The ACCC also notes that services to transport or store goods for business purposes are not covered by the guarantees, but a household move is.

What Consumer Protection WA says about removalists

Consumer Protection WA has warned about rogue removal operators in Perth, with complaints about damaged goods, late arrivals, untrained contractors, false insurance claims, poorly equipped vehicles and pressure to pay before the job was finished. Its advice: get three written quotes; get a proposal on company letterhead with the terms and conditions and a clear hourly rate or fixed price; don’t pay upfront, refuse a request for the final payment halfway through, and pay in full only at the end; and if insurance is included, find out exactly what it covers and ask for the Certificate of Currency.

AFRA membership

The Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA) is the industry body. It says it has more than 250 members operating in hundreds of locations and that it provides a no-cost dispute resolution process. The NSW Government says AFRA-accredited removalists must meet set standards, carry public liability insurance and can provide transit insurance for the goods being moved, but also points out that smaller removalists may not be AFRA members. Membership is worth asking about, not a guarantee; check it on the AFRA website rather than relying on a logo.
