Moving in Adelaide: temporary parking control for removalists and local removalists

Quick answer: The City of Adelaide lists removalists needing access to a property among the reasons for a Temporary Parking Control alteration, which changes the parking controls in front of your building for the move. The fee is $30.60 per parking space per day, so a truck needing three spaces costs $91.80 a day. Apply at least 5 working days ahead, or 3 weeks ahead if non-standard signs are needed. Airtasker puts Adelaide removalist rates at $133 to $178 an hour for two movers and a truck.

Temporary Parking Control alterations in the City of Adelaide

The City of Adelaide’s parking control alteration process covers temporary changes to the parking controls on a street, and it names “a removalist requiring access to a property or building” as one of the reasons to apply. The key points:

City of Adelaide ruleWhat it says
Fee$30.60 per parking space per day (Temporary Parking Control)
ExampleOne space for one day: $30.60; three spaces for one day: $91.80
Notice5 working days in advance for most requests
Non-standard signs3 weeks in advance if the request needs signs other than “Permit Zone at All Times” or “No Stopping at All Times”
What to sendA map or image showing the parking spaces to be altered

The City has an online fee calculator for estimating the cost before you apply. Note that permanent changes to parking controls are a different process, with a minimum three-week community consultation; a one-day removal only needs the temporary process. These are City of Adelaide rules for the CBD and North Adelaide. Most Adelaide suburbs are in other councils, such as Unley, Norwood Payneham & St Peters or Charles Sturt, so check the council for each address.

Apartments

If either home is an apartment, ask the strata or community corporation manager, or the building manager, for the building’s rules on moving and whether the lift or loading dock must be booked. Give your removalist the booking times so the truck arrives inside them.

Typical removalist prices

Start with the national ranges in our Australia removal costs guide. Airtasker’s cost guide, updated June 2026, puts the standard package of two removalists and a truck at $111 to $200 an hour nationally, and at $133 to $178 an hour in Adelaide. It gives $1,430 to $2,210 for a three-bedroom house with three movers and a truck, and says weekend, public holiday, end-of-month and summer moves typically cost 20% to 30% more than the base rate. All prices are in Australian dollars and were checked in September 2026.

How to choose a removalist in Adelaide

  • Get at least three written, itemised quotes based on an inventory of what is moving, and ask how time is billed and whether a fuel levy applies.
  • Ask who arranges the council parking permit and who pays for it.
  • Ask about insurance. State regulators say most removalists only insure their own vehicles, so ask what cover applies to your goods and for a certificate of currency.
  • Avoid paying upfront. See deposits and final payments.
  • Apartment move? Book the lift and loading dock early. See moving from a flat: lifts, stairs, parking and building access.

Your consumer rights under the Australian Consumer Law

The ACCC says that when you buy a service, you are entitled to expect it to be provided with due care and skill, to be fit for any purpose you specified, and to be delivered within a reasonable time. If a guarantee is not met, the remedy depends on the situation and can include repair, a refund, cancelling the service, or compensation for damage or loss. The ACCC also notes that services to transport or store goods for business purposes are not covered by the guarantees, but a household move is.

What Consumer and Business Services says about removalists

Consumer and Business Services (CBS) says to work out your needs first (how much is moving, the distance, stairs and extras such as packing) so the quote matches, to compare several written quotes, and to photograph your furniture, especially valuable items, as evidence. It notes that consumer guarantees do not cover things beyond the removalist’s control, such as a branch falling on the truck, so check whether your home and contents insurance covers the move. If something goes wrong, raise it with the removalist, then in writing with a reasonable time to respond (it suggests 7 days), and contact CBS if it is still unresolved.

AFRA membership

The Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA) is the industry body. It says it has more than 250 members operating in hundreds of locations and that it provides a no-cost dispute resolution process. The NSW Government says AFRA-accredited removalists must meet set standards, carry public liability insurance and can provide transit insurance for the goods being moved, but also points out that smaller removalists may not be AFRA members. Membership is worth asking about, not a guarantee; check it on the AFRA website rather than relying on a logo.
