For a marble or stone table, tell the removal firm what the item is before it prices the move. Share dimensions, any reliable weight information, photographs and the access route. Ask for a specialist assessment where the construction, weight or route needs it. This is a planning guide, not instructions for lifting stone yourself.

Identify the construction

Explain whether it is a dining table, coffee table, console or a separate top on a base. Send the model or maker’s information if available. Note cracks, repairs, chipped edges and whether the top is fixed. If you do not know whether it separates, say so rather than assuming it can be dismantled.

Use reliable supplier information for weight where possible. Do not turn an online estimate for a different table into a confirmed lifting specification.

Show both access routes

Photograph doors, hall turns, stairs, lifts and the approach from the vehicle. Tell the firm whether the destination room is upstairs and whether parking creates a long carry. An easy collection does not prove an easy delivery.

See furniture that will not fit through the door and our removal-survey guide for the information to gather.

Ask how the job will be assessed

Ask whether the firm handles that type of table routinely, whether a specialist contractor is needed and what assessment it requires before confirming the job. Discuss any dismantling with someone competent to identify the fixings and construction.

Do not improvise a lift by adding people or gripping fragile edges. HSE’s guidance prioritises avoiding hazardous handling and assessing work that cannot be avoided. Equipment and crew arrangements need to be selected for the actual item and route.

Confirm packing, value and exclusions

Ask what protection is included, whether a case or crate is required, who provides it and whether the quote covers dismantling and reassembly. Declare the value and discuss evidence for it. Check the written treatment of existing damage and any limitations affecting stone items.

Our removals-insurance overview is a starting point; the actual booking and cover documents govern your move.

Make the inventory useful

A description such as “stone dining table, repaired edge, manufacturer weight unavailable; ground-floor collection, first-floor delivery” tells a firm far more than “table”. Add photographs that show condition and construction without including unnecessary personal information.

Compare House Movers is building Move Planner, an app that keeps item descriptions and photographs with the quote request; contact us for pricing and availability. No app can assess the table’s structure or a safe lifting method, so get that confirmation from the firm before booking.

Should I detach the top before the crew arrives?

Do not assume it is safe or intended to detach. Ask the manufacturer or a competent specialist and agree who will do any dismantling.
