A shared-load move carries more than one customer’s belongings within the transport arrangement. It may suit a smaller move with flexible dates, but compare the delivery window, handling and total scope rather than assuming it will always be cheaper. Ask the firm exactly how its service works.

Establish which dates are fixed

Ask separately about collection and delivery. Can either date move within a window? How much notice will you receive? Will you need to be available throughout that window, and is there a named person who can receive the load if you are away?

If you must vacate a property on a fixed day, a flexible collection may be unsuitable even when delivery can wait. For purchase timing, read our moving timeline and speak to the people handling the transaction.

Ask where handling happens

Clarify whether the belongings stay on one vehicle, pass through a depot or enter storage before delivery. Ask how boxes and furniture are identified and kept with the correct consignment. Establish what inventory or receipt is provided at collection and what you will check at delivery.

A label saying only “bedroom” is not enough for your own organisation. Use consistent item descriptions and box references, and keep an accessible copy of the inventory.

Compare the full price

Request separate confirmation of packing, collection, transfers, temporary storage, delivery, access charges and any redelivery if you cannot receive the load. Compare it with a dedicated service using the same inventory and access details.

Do not compare a broad delivery window with a guaranteed appointment as though they were identical products. Our quote-comparison guide helps keep scope visible alongside price.

Plan what will stay with you

Carry the documents, medicines, keys and essentials you need during a delay. Think about temporary sleeping and working arrangements if household belongings arrive later. The service is a poor fit if a few days without a specific item creates an unmanageable problem.

Ask about cover during every stage of the route, including any storage or transfer. Read the actual terms rather than assuming collection and delivery are the only relevant periods.

Keep a record of the agreed service

Use one move brief, retain the firm’s inventory and confirm changes in writing. Compare House Movers is building Move Planner, an app that keeps the inventory and the accepted quote together; contact us for pricing and availability. It will not track a shared vehicle live, so ask the firm how it will update you during the delivery window.

Is a shared load always the lowest-priced option?

No. The result depends on the route, available space, dates and additional handling. Compare written quotes for your actual move, including the cost of waiting or temporary arrangements that you would bear yourself.
