Moving in Sydney: parking permits for removalist trucks, strata by-laws and local removalists

Quick answer: We could not find a City of Sydney permit that reserves kerb space for a household move, but residents in permit areas can use a residential visitor permit for the removalist’s truck: the City says a removalist’s truck is one of the vehicles allowed to use one, and a book of 10 single-day permits costs $30 ($11 for pensioners), posted within about 5 working days. In a strata building, the NSW by-law on moving furniture requires notice to the strata committee first. Airtasker puts Sydney removalist rates at $120 to $200 an hour for two movers and a truck.

Parking a removalist truck in the City of Sydney

Inner Sydney streets are mostly time-limited or permit parking, which is hard on a removal truck that needs several hours outside the door. The City of Sydney’s residential visitor permits are the tool it offers residents:

City of Sydney ruleWhat it saysWhat it means on moving day
Who can use a visitor permitPassenger and commercial vehicles under 4.5 tonnes, or a removalist’s truck; not caravans, box trailers or boat trailersA larger removal truck can still use one
What it doesA single-use, one-day “scratchie” that lets the vehicle avoid time limits and parking feesScratch off the date of the move; one date only

A visitor permit works in the permit area of the household it was issued to, and it does not reserve a space: the truck still has to find a legal spot. The City also says a temporary parking permit may be issued to tenants or owners of eligible properties while address details are updated after a move, and residential permits for your own car are priced separately. If you are moving in another Sydney council area, such as Inner West, Waverley or Parramatta, check that council’s own permit rules.

Moving into or out of a Sydney apartment

Most Sydney apartments are strata schemes, and the by-laws matter on moving day. The NSW Strata Schemes Management Regulation 2016 includes a by-law, “Moving furniture and other objects on or through common property”, which says an owner or occupier must not move furniture or large objects through common property unless sufficient notice has first been given to the strata committee so it can have a nominee present. The NSW Government explains that owners corporations often adopt the model by-laws and then add their own, so ask the strata manager for the scheme’s by-laws and any lift-booking or loading-dock rules well before you book the removalist.

Typical removalist prices

Start with the national ranges in our Australia removal costs guide. Airtasker’s cost guide, updated June 2026, puts the standard package of two removalists and a truck at $111 to $200 an hour nationally, and at $120 to $200 an hour in Sydney. It gives $1,430 to $2,210 for a three-bedroom house with three movers and a truck, and says weekend, public holiday, end-of-month and summer moves typically cost 20% to 30% more than the base rate. All prices are in Australian dollars and were checked in September 2026.

How to choose a removalist in Sydney

  • Get at least three written, itemised quotes based on an inventory of what is moving, and ask how time is billed and whether a fuel levy applies.
  • Ask who arranges the council parking permit and who pays for it.
  • Ask about insurance. State regulators say most removalists only insure their own vehicles, so ask what cover applies to your goods and for a certificate of currency.
  • Avoid paying upfront. See deposits and final payments.
  • Apartment move? Book the lift and loading dock early. See moving from a flat: lifts, stairs, parking and building access.

Your consumer rights under the Australian Consumer Law

The ACCC says that when you buy a service, you are entitled to expect it to be provided with due care and skill, to be fit for any purpose you specified, and to be delivered within a reasonable time. If a guarantee is not met, the remedy depends on the situation and can include repair, a refund, cancelling the service, or compensation for damage or loss. The ACCC also notes that services to transport or store goods for business purposes are not covered by the guarantees, but a household move is.

What NSW Fair Trading says about removalists

The NSW Government’s guide says to always get a written, itemised quote, to give the removalist full details so the quote is accurate, and to read the contract to make sure it includes a household inventory and how payment is to be made. It also warns that removalists are not required by law to insure your property during a move, and that most only insure their own vehicle, so it recommends your own transit cover. If you cannot resolve a problem, NSW Fair Trading takes complaints.

AFRA membership

The Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA) is the industry body. It says it has more than 250 members operating in hundreds of locations and that it provides a no-cost dispute resolution process. The NSW Government says AFRA-accredited removalists must meet set standards, carry public liability insurance and can provide transit insurance for the goods being moved, but also points out that smaller removalists may not be AFRA members. Membership is worth asking about, not a guarantee; check it on the AFRA website rather than relying on a logo.
