Removals in Birmingham: parking suspensions, Clean Air Zone and costs

Quick answer: Birmingham City Council charges £18.90 a day to suspend one to three parking bays, plus £87.60 to set up and remove the signs and an £18.90 admin fee, and it needs at least 48 hours’ notice. If your van enters the Clean Air Zone inside the A4540 Middleway and does not meet its standards, that costs £8 a day (£50 for HGVs). Checked September 2026.

Parking for a removal van in Birmingham

Birmingham’s parking suspensions are handled centrally by the city council. You apply by email to the parking team, and costs must be paid before the suspension starts. The council’s published charges are:

What you needCostNotes
Bay suspension, 1 to 3 bays£18.90 per dayCharged every day, including Sundays and bank holidays
Additional bays (in multiples of 3)£18.90 per daySame daily rate for each extra block of 3
Set up on site and removal (up to 15 bays)£87.60One-off
Administration£18.90One-off
Parking dispensation£23.90 per vehicle per dayLets a vehicle park on some restrictions, such as residents’ or business permit bays, limited-wait bays and loading bays

On our reading of that table, a one-day suspension of up to three bays comes to about £125.40 (the daily charge, set-up and admin). Two points matter for movers. First, the council gives a minimum of 48 hours’ notice for both suspensions and dispensations, but that is the least it will consider, so apply earlier. Second, the parking team deals with suspensions inside the City Centre Controlled Parking Zones. Outside them, the council says a suspension may need a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order arranged through its Highways Traffic Management Team, which takes longer. A dispensation is granted only where there is a clear reason the vehicle needs to park there and no suitable alternative. Our guide to suspensions and dispensations explains the difference.

Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone

Birmingham is one of the English cities with a charging Clean Air Zone listed on GOV.UK. The zone covers the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway, but not the Middleway itself, and runs 24 hours a day, every day. Cameras read the number plate of every vehicle in the zone. A vehicle that does not meet the emission standards pays:

VehicleDaily charge
Cars, vans and taxis£8
Coaches, buses and HGVs£50

You can pay up to six days before, on the day, or up to six days after, and a penalty charge notice goes to the registered keeper if it is not paid by 11:59pm on the sixth day. For a move, the charge falls on the van, so ask the firm whether its vehicles are compliant and whether any charge is passed on. If either address is inside the Middleway ring, assume the van will be in the zone. See what clean air zones add to a move.

Typical removal prices in Birmingham

For the national picture, see our UK removal costs guide. As a starting point, Checkatrade puts a standard local move at around £500–£700 and a two-person crew with a van at £50–£80 an hour, and Sirelo puts a local three-bedroom move at about £985 if you pack yourself (all checked September 2026).

Konnect You’s Birmingham guide, updated September 2026 and based on quotes from its member firms, gives average costs of £430 for a one-bedroom property, £606 for two bedrooms, £1,089 for three and £1,367 for four or more, and describes the city as one of the more affordable major cities for removals. Treat these as a benchmark only: your quote depends on volume, access and the date.

How to choose a removal company in Birmingham

The useful checks on a removal firm come down to memberships, vehicles and paperwork. Ask each firm the same questions so the quotes are comparable:

  • BAR membership. The British Association of Removers says its members follow a Chartered Trading Standards Institute Code of Practice, are audited annually, and that money paid in advance is covered by its Advanced Payment Guarantee. If a firm says it is a member, check the BAR directory yourself rather than relying on a logo. Our guide explains what the BAR badge checks.
  • Operator licence for bigger lorries. GOV.UK says you need a goods vehicle operator licence for vehicles with a gross plated weight over 3,500kg. A firm using full-size removal lorries should have one, so ask for the licence number. A man-and-van service using a van at or under that weight does not need one.
  • Who arranges the parking. Ask whether the quote includes the council suspension or dispensation, and who applies. Some firms handle it, others leave it to you.
  • Clean air and congestion charges. Ask whether any zone charge for the van is included or added on the day.
  • What the price covers. Packing, dismantling, stairs, long carries and waiting time are the usual extras. See how to compare removal quotes.
  • Cover for your belongings. Ask what the firm’s goods-in-transit cover pays out and what it excludes, and get the answer in writing.

How much notice does Birmingham need for a parking suspension?

At least 48 hours for the council to consider it, for both suspensions and dispensations. Outside the city centre parking zones a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order may be needed instead, so apply as early as you can.

Does the Clean Air Zone charge apply to my car on moving day?

Only if your car does not meet the zone’s standards and you drive inside the A4540 Middleway. The charge is £8 a day for cars and vans. Check your own vehicle as well as the removal van.

Can I pay the Clean Air Zone charge after the move?

Yes, up to 11:59pm on the sixth day after the journey. After that a penalty charge notice is sent to the registered keeper.

Is a dispensation cheaper than a suspension?

A dispensation costs £23.90 per vehicle per day, but it does not reserve a space; it only lets the vehicle park on certain restrictions when there is a clear need. A suspension keeps the bays free for you.
