Removals in Glasgow: parking suspensions, the LEZ and local costs

Quick answer: reserving street space for a removal van in Glasgow is more involved than in most UK cities. Glasgow City Council needs a Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice arranged through a qualified traffic management contractor, at least 9 full days ahead, and you also pay the parking charge for every suspended space for the full 10-hour day. Vans that do not meet the city centre Low Emission Zone standards face a £60 penalty. Checked September 2026.

Parking for a removal van in Glasgow

The council says plainly that it does not provide free parking for any type of request. There are three routes, depending on how much certainty you need.

OptionWho can applyNoticeWhat it costs
Parking suspension (reserves the space)Through a qualified traffic management contractorAt least 9 full days before the start dateThe Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice (up to 21 days) or Order (over 21 days) fee from the council’s Book of Charges, plus the parking charge for each suspended space for the whole 8am to 6pm day
Parking dispensation (permission, not a reserved space)Registered businesses only, and only the vehicle’s owner or operatorAt least 3 full daysAllows overstaying the 30-minute loading limit on yellow lines or in a loading bay, or the maximum stay in a parking space; pay-and-display time still has to be paid
Resident’s visitor vouchersA resident of a parking zone, outside the city centre–£5 for 6 hours of parking in that zone

The council gives a worked example of the parking charge: suspending two spaces for three days where parking costs £0.80 per 15 minutes means paying the full 10-hour period for each space, £192 in total, on top of the notice fee. Once approved, the contractor must display the notice at least 48 hours before, put out yellow no-waiting cones after 6pm the night before, no more than 5 metres apart, and record any vehicle already parked there. Because only businesses can apply for a dispensation, in practice the removal firm usually arranges it, so ask at quote stage whether it will and what it charges.

Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone

Glasgow’s LEZ came into force on 1 June 2023 and covers the city centre. Scotland’s zones run 24 hours a day, every day, including Christmas Day, and you cannot pay to enter: a non-compliant vehicle simply gets a penalty charge notice. mygov.scot sets out the penalties:

PenaltyAmount
First penalty£60, reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days
Each further breach in the same zone within 90 daysThe charge doubles
Maximum for cars and light goods vehicles£480
Maximum for minibuses, buses, coaches and HGVs£960

Only one penalty is issued per zone per day, and the amount resets to £60 after 90 days without one. For a move into or out of a city-centre flat, confirm the van is LEZ compliant; Transport Scotland runs a vehicle checker. Motorcycles and mopeds are not affected.

Typical removal prices in Glasgow

For the national picture, see our UK removal costs guide. As a starting point, Checkatrade puts a standard local move at around £500–£700 and a two-person crew with a van at £50–£80 an hour, and Sirelo puts a local three-bedroom move at about £985 if you pack yourself (all checked September 2026).

Konnect You’s Glasgow guide, updated September 2026, puts a two-bedroom move at £601 on average against £834 nationally, and a three-bedroom move at £917 against £1,252. It says access, not distance, is what moves Glasgow prices: a top-floor tenement flat with a narrow close and stairs can cost hundreds of pounds more than a ground-floor flat with easy parking. Tell each firm the floor, whether there is a lift and how far the van can get from the close.

How to choose a removal company in Glasgow

The useful checks on a removal firm come down to memberships, vehicles and paperwork. Ask each firm the same questions so the quotes are comparable:

  • BAR membership. The British Association of Removers says its members follow a Chartered Trading Standards Institute Code of Practice, are audited annually, and that money paid in advance is covered by its Advanced Payment Guarantee. If a firm says it is a member, check the BAR directory yourself rather than relying on a logo. Our guide explains what the BAR badge checks.
  • Operator licence for bigger lorries. GOV.UK says you need a goods vehicle operator licence for vehicles with a gross plated weight over 3,500kg. A firm using full-size removal lorries should have one, so ask for the licence number. A man-and-van service using a van at or under that weight does not need one.
  • Who arranges the parking. Ask whether the quote includes the council suspension or dispensation, and who applies. Some firms handle it, others leave it to you.
  • Clean air and congestion charges. Ask whether any zone charge for the van is included or added on the day.
  • What the price covers. Packing, dismantling, stairs, long carries and waiting time are the usual extras. See how to compare removal quotes.
  • Cover for your belongings. Ask what the firm’s goods-in-transit cover pays out and what it excludes, and get the answer in writing.

Can I apply for a Glasgow parking suspension myself?

The council requires a qualified traffic management contractor to manage a suspension, and dispensations are only considered from registered businesses. Most householders ask their removal firm to arrange it.

How much notice does Glasgow need?

At least 9 full days before the start date for a suspension, and 3 full days for a dispensation.

Can I pay to drive a non-compliant van into the LEZ?

No. In Scotland you cannot pay to enter a Low Emission Zone. A non-compliant, non-exempt vehicle gets a penalty charge notice, starting at £60.

Why do Glasgow tenement moves cost more?

Konnect You’s data points to access: stairs, narrow closes and limited loading space add time. A ground-floor flat can be much cheaper to move than a top-floor one on the same street.
