Quick answer: Manchester City Council charges £30 per bay per day to suspend on-street pay and display bays for a domestic removal, and £30 per vehicle per day for a dispensation to park on yellow lines. It needs at least 5 working days’ notice. There are no clean air charges anywhere in Greater Manchester. Checked September 2026.
Parking for a removal van in Manchester
Manchester City Council lists domestic removals among the reasons it will suspend on-street pay and display bays, alongside building work, weddings, funerals, events and long deliveries. Its published charges are simple:
| What you need | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension of an on-street pay and display bay | £30 per bay per day | Reserves the bay for your van |
| Dispensation to park on single or double yellow lines | £30 per vehicle per day | For a named vehicle, place and time; a certificate must be displayed in the vehicle |
| Notice period | At least 5 working days | Late applications may be delayed or refused |
So one bay for one day costs £30, and a longer removal lorry that needs two bays costs £60. The council also says it is your responsibility to visit the site and check the location suits your needs before you apply, and warns against relying on online maps, which may be out of date. If you are moving to or from a city-centre flat in Ancoats, the Northern Quarter or Castlefield, that visit is worth doing: note the loading bays, the building’s entrance and whether the van can stop outside at all.
Greater Manchester is made up of ten councils. If your address is in Salford, Trafford, Stockport or another neighbouring borough, you apply to that council, not Manchester, and its fees and notice periods will differ. Our guide to suspensions and dispensations explains what to ask.
No Clean Air Zone charges
Clean Air Greater Manchester says there are no clean air charges to drive anywhere in Greater Manchester. The charging Clean Air Zone that was originally planned would have applied daily charges to some older vans, buses, taxis and HGVs, but in 2025 the government approved an investment-led plan without charges instead. So unlike Birmingham, London or Glasgow, the removal van’s age does not add a zone charge to a Manchester move. More on where clean air zones do apply.
Typical removal prices in Manchester
For the national picture, see our UK removal costs guide. As a starting point, Checkatrade puts a standard local move at around £500–£700 and a two-person crew with a van at £50–£80 an hour, and Sirelo puts a local three-bedroom move at about £985 if you pack yourself (all checked September 2026).
Konnect You’s Manchester guide, updated September 2026, says removal costs on its data range from £492 for a one-bedroom move to £1,265 for a four-bedroom move, and that Manchester comes in below its UK average at every property size. It also notes that many Manchester moves involve city-centre flats where access, not distance, drives the time a job takes. Use these figures as a rough benchmark and compare written quotes.

How to choose a removal company in Manchester
The useful checks on a removal firm come down to memberships, vehicles and paperwork. Ask each firm the same questions so the quotes are comparable:
- BAR membership. The British Association of Removers says its members follow a Chartered Trading Standards Institute Code of Practice, are audited annually, and that money paid in advance is covered by its Advanced Payment Guarantee. If a firm says it is a member, check the BAR directory yourself rather than relying on a logo. Our guide explains what the BAR badge checks.
- Operator licence for bigger lorries. GOV.UK says you need a goods vehicle operator licence for vehicles with a gross plated weight over 3,500kg. A firm using full-size removal lorries should have one, so ask for the licence number. A man-and-van service using a van at or under that weight does not need one.
- Who arranges the parking. Ask whether the quote includes the council suspension or dispensation, and who applies. Some firms handle it, others leave it to you.
- Clean air and congestion charges. Ask whether any zone charge for the van is included or added on the day.
- What the price covers. Packing, dismantling, stairs, long carries and waiting time are the usual extras. See how to compare removal quotes.
- Cover for your belongings. Ask what the firm’s goods-in-transit cover pays out and what it excludes, and get the answer in writing.
