Quick answer: to reserve kerb space for a moving truck in Calgary you need a Street Use Permit plus a Temporary No Parking Permit, applied for together. The Street Use Permit is $31.50 a day plus GST, and the no-parking permit is included in that cost, although ParkPlus parking fees apply if the space is in a paid zone. You must get the signs from an authorised third party and put them up at least 12 hours before. We found no Alberta licence for movers, so your checks matter.
Reserving space for a moving truck in Calgary
The City of Calgary says a Street Use Permit, issued under Streets Bylaw 20M88, is needed to use any City road right-of-way exclusively, and it lists “reserving space for filming or moving” and “placement of a garbage bin or a moving container” among the reasons. To stop other cars parking in the space, you also need a Temporary No Parking Permit, which the City says supports activities including personal moves and is only issued alongside a Street Use Permit.
| Permit (City of Calgary) | Cost (before GST) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Street Use Permit, site-specific | $31.50 per day | Base fee; extra charges can apply for reviews or complex closures |
| Temporary No Parking Permit | Included in the Street Use Permit cost | ParkPlus paid-parking fees apply for the restriction if the space is in a ParkPlus zone, most often downtown |
| Planning and coordination | $158.05 per hour | For plan reviews, revisions and coordination where needed |
| Hoarding permit | Separate fee | Needed if a closure lasts over 24 hours or affects weekday peak hours (6 to 9 a.m., 3 to 6 p.m.) |
Signs. The permit holder has to get temporary no-parking signs from an authorised third party, install them at least 12 hours before the restriction, and make sure they carry clearly visible time-and-date decals. The City says the zone is only enforceable when the signs are properly installed and show the approved dates and times.
Timing. The City’s minimum review times start at five business days for lower-impact closures, rising to 10 or 15 business days for longer, downtown or peak-hour closures. Apply online with a City of Calgary myID well before moving day, and ask your mover whether it holds the permits or expects you to.
Residential Parking Zones. Calgary Parking says residential parking is enforced 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so a truck parked without a permit in a permit zone risks a ticket. Calgary also restricts trucks to designated truck routes under its Truck Routes Bylaw; a professional mover should know how that applies to its vehicles.
Your rights in Alberta
We could not find an Alberta licence specifically for household movers. The Canadian Association of Movers says movers are not licensed in Canada and that each province governs the carriage of household goods separately. What you do have is Alberta’s Consumer Protection Act, which the Government of Alberta says protects consumers from unfair practices, and the general advice from the federal Office of Consumer Affairs below: written, signed quotes after the mover has seen your belongings, clarity on deposits and cancellation, and a clear answer on liability. The federal guide notes that a mover can legally ask for payment before delivery, and that in most situations this will not be more than 10% above the estimate.
Typical moving prices
Start with the national ranges in our Canada moving costs guide. HomeStars, updated August 2026, says most companies charge $120 to $200 an hour for a two-person crew with a truck, and puts a local one-bedroom apartment move at $300 to $900 and a three-bedroom house at $900 to $1,600. It also warns that summer and month-end moves can push rates up sharply, sometimes to double the standard hourly rate. All figures are in Canadian dollars and were checked in September 2026. HomeStars’ Calgary guide, based on a small number of homeowner reviews, puts a local move at $833 on average, with a range of $400 to $1,200.

Movers are not licensed at federal level. The Canadian Association of Movers (CAM), the industry trade body, says the industry was deregulated in the mid-1980s and each province governs the carriage of household goods separately. The federal Office of Consumer Affairs suggests getting estimates from at least three movers and checking whether each is CAM-certified; making sure the mover sees everything before it quotes; checking whether you are dealing with a broker who sub-contracts the job; and knowing that without replacement value protection, the mover is generally liable for only $0.60 per pound ($1.32 per kg) per item. CAM’s warning signs are no physical address, cash-only payment, no written promises and no visual survey of your home.
Moving to or from Calgary across the border
If you are moving to Canada to live, or returning after a year or more abroad, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) rules decide whether your household goods come in duty- and tax-free. CBSA says to prepare two copies of a list of everything you are bringing, with values and serial numbers, split into goods with you and goods to follow; later shipments only qualify if they are on that list. You hand the list over at your first point of entry, even with nothing in hand, and the officer completes form BSF186, which you need to clear the shipment. Returning former residents must have owned and used the goods abroad for at least six months, and any single item worth over $10,000 is taxed on the excess. Our guide to preparing your goods-to-follow list for Canada covers the paperwork.
