Mail redirection is a safety net, not a replacement for updating organisations directly. Prioritise identity, money, tax, benefits, vehicles, insurance, health, utilities and security. This checklist is free to read and print; no email sign-up is needed.

Before the move

Where permitted, schedule utilities, broadband, insurance and postal redirection. Notify employers, schools/care and service providers where timing affects continuity. Do not change an official address before you legally occupy or leave if that would make the record inaccurate.

Until your move date is legally secure (exchange of contracts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; concluded missives in Scotland; or a signed tenancy), treat any date you give as provisional and choose organisations that let you change it. Give firm dates once the move is confirmed. The moving house checklist shows where address changes fit among the other tasks.

Core categories

  • banks, cards, lenders and pensions;
  • HMRC, benefits, council/local tax and electoral registration;
  • driving licence and vehicle records;
  • insurers and breakdown cover;
  • GP, dentist, pharmacy and care providers;
  • energy, water, broadband and mobile;
  • employer, education and professional bodies;
  • subscriptions, deliveries and online retailers;
  • pet microchip/registers and licences where relevant.

Use official websites reached independently; never follow unexpected address-update links requesting full credentials.

Where the rules differ by nation

  • Driving licences in England, Scotland and Wales: GOV.UK says it does not cost anything to change your address with DVLA, that you can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA when your address changes, and that you must also change the address on your vehicle log book (V5C).
  • Driving licences in Northern Ireland: address changes on a Northern Ireland licence go to the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA), not DVLA. The guide to updating driving licence and vehicle records with DVLA or DVA covers both.
  • Local tax: council tax applies in England, Wales and Scotland; Northern Ireland uses rates. See council tax and rates when you move.
  • Electoral register: GOV.UK says you will need to register again if you have changed your address. See moving house and the electoral register for postal votes and the open register.

Track confirmation

Record organisation, account/reference, request date, effective date and confirmation. Avoid storing passwords in the checklist.

FAQs

Which updates happen before the move?

Those needed for service continuity or scheduled handover, if the organisation allows a future effective date.

Is redirection enough?

No. Redirection does not catch everything, for example items sent by other delivery companies, and it does not last indefinitely. Update each important record directly.

Do I need to give my email address to use this checklist?

No. The checklist on this page is free to read and print without signing up.

Suggested component

Use a privacy-minimised Address Change Tracker with status and official links, never credential fields.
