Booking an Interstate Mover in the USA: Registration, Estimates and Your Rights
For a move crossing US state lines, use the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's official tools and documents.
In this guide
For a move crossing US state lines, use the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s official tools and documents. Interstate rules do not automatically govern every local move.
Identify mover versus broker
A carrier transports the goods; a broker arranges transportation by a carrier. Check the company in FMCSA’s Protect Your Move resources, including USDOT information, complaint/safety records available and whether it is authorised for the role advertised.
Ask for the actual carrier before loading. A broker’s quote is not proof that one named mover will perform the job.
Estimate and inventory
Provide a complete inventory and access information. Understand whether the estimate is binding, non-binding or binding-not-to-exceed under current FMCSA rules, and how changes are documented before loading.
Documents
Obtain and read the FMCSA rights-and-responsibilities booklet, estimate, order for service, bill of lading, inventory and valuation selection. Keep them accessible, not packed.
Warning signs
Be cautious of refusal to survey, demands for large cash deposits, missing USDOT identity, blank documents, last-minute carrier changes or pressure to sign revised paperwork without explanation.
